Moments of Life: Hair Donations at Three Rivers Community CollegeMore than 25 people showed up to a cramped conference room at Three Rivers Community College April 8 to donate their hair. The event was part of a program called Pantene Beautiful Lengths in association with the American Cancer Society. The program is geared toward giving wigs to female cancer patients to boost their confidence after losing their hair from cancer treatments. Ron Croxton, 44, of Norwich, the only male to donate, gave about 9 inches of his locks. He had waited nearly three years to grow out his hair.I heard they were giving free haircuts so I decided to come down. But I thought it was just a good cause, Croxton said.Marry Cassidy, 33, brought her daughters, Brittany Cassidy, 10, and Amber Cassidy, 6, who each donated about 8-9 inches of hair.Their grandmother was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and she lost all her hair doing chemo and radiation treatments. And because grandma lost all her hair, (Amber) decided to donate her hair so other grandmas could have wigs, Marry Cassidy said.Hair stylists Valdez Madrey, 28, of Connecticutz, and Alicia Frink, 26, and Kristen Jodoin, 28, of A Cut Above donated their time and skills to the cause.Heather Cassidy, 25, of Salem organized the event. She was motivated to do it after donating her own hair and learning that it takes more than six donations to make a wig. She said the event was a success. We ended up having 25 donations, so hopefully that will be four wigs, she said.
